Establishing an independent translational research centre (TRC) in Austria.

Research institutions in the life sciences sector for technology transfer

Between 2014 and 2017, one of four Knowledge Transfer Centres, the translational research initiative “wings4innovation” (w4i), was exclusively sponsored with EUR 1.5m by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) via the aws.wings4innovation was originally the initiative of 17 Austrian academic research institutions that emerged from the Knowledge Transfer Centre with the aim of establishing an independent Translational Research Centre (TRC) in the field of life sciences in order to transfer promising ideas from basic research into commercially viable product candidates. The focus of such a TRC should be on the early-stage development of innovative drug candidates (both small molecules and biologicals) for diseases with a high medical need.

Austria Wirtschaftsservice, the Austrian Federal Promotional Bank (aws) is committed to promote technology transfer initiatives. In the framework of the Knowledge Transfer Centres Program (“Wissentransferzentren”, WTZ) the area of life sciences was supported among other initiatives. The participation of aws in the establishment of the KHAN Technology Transfer Fund I GmbH & Co. KG, a new European financing vehicle for drug candidate projects mainly coming from Austria and Germany, with funds from the Austrian Foundation for Research, Technology and Development and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW) (additional investors are the European Investment Fund and the Max Planck Foundation) is enabling the setup of an Austrian TRC:
wings4innovation (w4i) GmbH is currently being founded and will act as an intermediary for professional, translational research in the biomedical field, identify suitable Austrian project ideas and facilitate their development and commercialisation.
